14 Jul Abnormal walking producing Knee Arthritis
Patients affected by Polio in childhood have what we call in Medical terms Post Polio Residual Paralysis (PPRP) . It’s because of the loss of functionality of muscles of the limb and it varies widely .
In the following pictures you can see the deformity , abnormal Gait and increased sole thickness at pressure points due to abnormal distribution of weight . Also old tendon transfer surgical scars which helped her to walk .
PPRP affects the same side knee and the opposite side knee as well due to overloading of the normal knee for years . Usually above 40 to 45 years of age the affected joints start showing symptoms and it’s essential to have a control over the progression of knee arthritis by doing muscular strengthening exercises .
Eventually these abnormal walking pattern results in low back pain if neglected .
Good news is patients usually have good improvement with non surgical conservative management . But Some patients whose knee arthritis becomes very bad require surgery .
